How to Wear Cufflinks and Studs – 5 Easy to Follow Steps

Cufflinks and Studs are generally worn with most formal shirts and may also be referred to as “Formal Jewelry”.  They’re a great way to add personal style to any tuxedo, suit or dress shirt.  With so many choices, they can also be a way to support your favorite sports team, thank your groomsmen for their service, or simply complete your formalwear look.

Your tuxedo rental will come with a set of formal jewelry which includes four studs and two cufflinks. A set of optional, premium jewelry is shown.

Inserting a shiny set of cufflinks and studs into your crisp, tuxedo shirt is easy! Follow these simple steps…

CUFFLINKS
Cufflinks – Step 1:
With your shirt on, pinch the cuffs of your sleeve together so that the insides of both sides of the shirt sleeve are pressed together or “kissing”.

Pinch the sleeve of the tuxedo shirt together.

Cufflinks – Step 2:
Insert the cufflink through both holes in the shirt’s cuff.  The colored, decorative part of the cufflink should face the outside when your arm is at your side.
Insert the Cufflink through both button holes.

Cufflinks – Step 3:
Depending on the cufflink style, you may need to secure the cufflink on the backside of the shirt’s cuff.

Bullet Back or Toggle Closure – The most common of all cufflink styles and the easiest to put on.  This style has a bullet shaped or narrow bar that is suspended between two posts.  Prior to inserting it through the shirt’s sleeve holes, the bar should be flipped 90 degrees, so that it lines up with the posts.  The bar is then flipped back to the horizontal position, securing the cufflink in place on the shirt.

Fixed Backing – Fixed backings are an extension of the cufflink.  This means that the cufflink post and backing are one solid piece and are affixed to the decorative side of the cufflink.  The backing does not bend or move in any way.   The rounded backing may be a bit harder to insert though the shirt’s holes, but the non-moving parts make it more resilient in the long run.

STUDS
Studs – Step 4:
Look for the stud hole next to each pearl button on the front of your tuxedo shirt.  Insert the front or decorative side of the stud through the stud hole… starting from the inside of the shirt.  You can ignore the pearl buttons found on your tuxedo shirt; they are not needed when wearing studs.

Insert the stud through the back stud hole.

Studs – Step 5:
Then, with the stud acting as a button, feed it through the font button hole on the formal shirt.  This will secure the front closed.  Repeat the process for all four studs.
Secure the front of the shirt closed using the stud.

Stud Style
Although black is the traditional color for tuxedo jewelry, the color of your formal jewelry may vary depending on your choice of tuxedo or suit.  Studs come in sets of four.  If you’re wearing a bow tie with your tuxedo or suit, you should wear all four studs.  However, if you choose to wear a windsor tie and vest with your tuxedo or suit, you may choose to skip wearing the studs, since they won’t be visible under the windsor tie.

14 Rules for Wearing a Tuxedo

Let’s face it. Most men may only wear a tuxedo a handful of times in their lives. So it really is no wonder that we get questions about how to wear a tuxedo on almost a daily basis.  Black tie attire is fairly simple to achieve. However, there are some rules that should not be broken and some that are free to be broken, in good taste of course.

This is by no means a comprehensive listing of formal wear etiquette. However, it should be sufficient to get any gentleman off to a good start. Here are some helpful tips to properly don a tuxedo at your next formal event.

1. When wearing a single-breasted tuxedo, thou shall always wear a cummerbund or vest. The primary concern is to conceal the bit of white shirt fabric that will show between your bottom coat button and your waistband.

A black fullback vest accompanies the Manhattan Slim Fit Tuxedo and is a classy accessory choice.

2. Thou shall never button all the buttons on your tuxedo coat. The only exception to the rule is when wearing a one button tuxedo. On two, three or four button tuxedo styles, the bottom button should always remain unbuttoned.

3. Thou shall not wear a belt with your formal tuxedo trousers. In fact, tuxedo pants should not have belt loops… ever.

4. Pleated front shirts are not necessary. Although they are more formal and traditional, oftentimes a man looks best in a microfiber, plain front shirt with a laydown collar.

5. When wearing a bow tie with a wing collar shirt, the wings should fall behind the bow tie.

The wing tips on a formal shirt lay behind your bow tie.

6. Thou shall wear formal shoes with your tuxedo ensemble – preferably a patent leather shoe style.

7. When wearing a cummerbund with your tuxedo, the pleats should face upwards.

8. Thou shall wear a pocket square. They are a must to complete any formal ensemble.  Choose a white satin pocket square with a black bow tie for a classic look, or choose a colorful tie and pocket square to liven up your look.

Add a splash of color to your tuxedo with a coordinating pocket square.

9. Don’t be afraid to add color to your ensemble with the use of formal accessories. Unless you’re attending a White Tie function where pique’ accessories are required, colored accessories are fair game. It’s not necessary to match, but you shall try to at least coordinate with your date’s attire.

Color coordination with your date makes the two of you look terrific for a night out on the town.

10. Thou shall wear suspenders with a tuxedo. However, in the event that your pants stay up without suspenders, they are not necessary.

11. Thou shall not wear pants with cuffs. Traditionally, formal trousers should have a satin stripe down the side of the pant, and they should feature a straight leg hem.

12. Thou shall wear white and ivory dinner jackets only during the warmer months (Memorial Day to Labor Day) unless you are visiting or live in a warm weather climate.

13. Know your dress code definitions: White Tie Invited, Black Tie Invited, Black Tie Preferred. If you think the organizers of an event meant something else, do not be embarrassed to inquire, since it would be far more embarrassing to show up in the wrong attire.

14. Smile; you’re going to look great in your tuxedo!

Tuxedo Rentals: As Easy as 1-2-3. Really!

We’re not kidding… renting a tuxedo for your upcoming formal affair is a very easy process, easier than you might think! You’re starting at the the right place. Jim’s Formal Wear is the preferred tuxedo source to over 5000 retailers nationwide and the largest supplier of men’s formal wear in the country. What that means to you is there is likely a retailer very close to where you live. We’ll mention more about our Nationwide Network of Retailers later.

O.K., let’s get into the simple steps of renting a tuxedo…

STEP 1: Create Your Tux.
The very first thing you want to do is create your tuxedo. Our website offers a number of methods to do this. You can simply browse tuxedo and accessory styles by visiting our Tuxedo and Accessory pages. When you find a tuxedo or an accessory item you like, you can do something as simple as print the web page and bring it to your nearest Jim’s Retailer. Not sure about that style? You can like or share the page/image on Facebook and Pinterest to solicit your friends’ opinions.

However, for a much more fun way to build a tuxedo, you can use our interactive Tuxedo Builder online application which can be launched from the top of our home page - or – from any number of tuxedo or accessory collection pages. Simply use the app to walk through the process of choosing each component of your tux including your tuxedo coat, pants, shirt, fullback vest, tie and formal shoes. When you come to the end, you can save the tuxedo ensemble to your Fitting Room for future review, start over, and build another style.

If you think you have your tuxedo built the way you want it, the Tuxedo Builder allows you to send the details of your personal tux to your chosen JFW retailer. The advantage will be less time spent in store perusing styles in our catalogs. However, your created tuxedo is not an absolute and you can change your mind at any time along the way!

Are you short of time and want to choose your tux from your mobile device? If you happen to have an iPad or iPhone, you can download The Tuxedo Builder apps and enjoy using them on your favorite Apple device. Learn more about getting them – for FREE – here.

STEP 2: Visit a Store.
Your next step is to locate and visit your nearest Jim’s Formal Wear Retailer. If you have not chosen a tuxedo before you enter their store, not a big deal. These experts are aware of the latest trends and the hottest colors in formal fashion and will help you make choices based on the event you are attending.

Your Jim’s Retailer will ask about your event, its date, and will instruct you when to visit the store to try on your tuxedo for a fitting. We, at Jim’s Formal Wear, and our Retailers want to make sure your tuxedo fits well, flatters your appearance, and makes you feel good wearing it. Before you leave, they will take your measurements. Leave that process up to them; taking your own measurements and having them be accurate is virtually impossible.

STEP 3: Pickup. Enjoy! Return.
Finally, your tuxedo will arrive at the store and your retailer will notify you. It’s a good idea to try the tuxedo on in-store to make sure it is perfect. And then you’ll be on your way…

All that’s left is for you to enjoy the admiring glances and compliments you receive about your formal look! It’s our job to create the Ultimate Formal Wear Experience for you and together with our Nationwide Network of Retailers, we will.

A lot of attention is focused on the bride’s appearance during the wedding day, but make no mistake about it, the day is equally as important for the groom! His tuxedo, his accessories and his overall fashion statement matters and it would be foolish to make a quick decision about his look for the big day. Thought, time and effort should be invested when selecting the groom’s attire, but how is this possible without multiple trips to a Jim’s Formal Wear Retailer’s store to discuss and view formal options?
